Levels

Four levels, and what each one asks

Teachers place every dancer after a placement visit, and ages are a guide. Each level lists its weekly hours first, so a family can plan before the audition.

  1. 01

    Preparatory

    Ages 9 to 11
    Skills
    • About 6 hours a week, over four days

    • Ballet barre and center in order, with first jazz

    • Learning to rehearse: counts, spacing and marking

    Moving up

Teachers review each dancer in the spring and talk with the family first. A dancer moves up when class work is steady and the teachers agree.

  2. 02

    Intermediate

    Ages 11 to 14
    Skills
    • About 10 hours a week, over five days and Saturday

    • Longer ballet combinations, jazz and a first contemporary class

    • A conditioning class built into the week

    Moving up

The same spring review. A teacher names what to work on, and the family hears the decision in a letter in April.

  3. 03

    Advanced

    Ages 13 to 16
    Skills
    • About 15 hours a week, over six days

    • Pointe work and variations when a teacher says a dancer is ready

    • Choreography for the spring performance and the regional events

    Moving up

Teachers look at technique, rehearsal habits and how a dancer works within a group, then meet the dancer and the family together.

  4. 04

    Conservatory

    Ages 15 to 18
    Skills
    • About 18 hours a week, over six days

    • Ballet and contemporary every weekday, with Saturday rehearsal

    • Audition coaching and guest teachers during the year

    Moving up

This is the highest level. Places are by invitation after a meeting between the teachers, the dancer and the family.

Sample levels.

Moving between levels

How does a dancer move up?

Teachers review every dancer in the spring and talk with the family before anything changes. A dancer moves up when class work is steady and the teachers agree, and the family hears the decision in a letter in April.

Can a dancer join at any level?

Yes, after a placement visit. We place dancers by what they do in class, not by age alone, so a dancer new to us may start above or below the level their friends are in.

What if hours are more than our family can manage?

Tell us at the placement visit. A dancer can take a level's technique classes without its rehearsals for a season, and we will say plainly what that changes.
