Before you audition

What the program asks of a family

We say it plainly, so a family can decide before the audition.

  • Time

Classes begin after school on weekdays and run into Saturday afternoon. Advanced dancers are in the studio about 15 hours a week and Conservatory dancers about 18, and rehearsals bring extra hours before a performance.

  • The drive

Classes start after school and end after dinner, so most families plan a carpool or a standing pickup. Regional events are a day's drive or a weekend away, and we post the list early in the season.

  • Costs beyond tuition

Costumes, event entries, travel and shoes each have their own line. We name every one, and what it is for.

    How tuition works
  • School and rest

Sundays have no classes, and school work comes first. Tell us about exam weeks and we will move rehearsals where we can.

Costs

Where the costs beyond tuition come from

Tuition is one line. A season has others, and a family comparing studios should see them side by side.

Costumes are ordered in winter and billed before the spring performance. Each regional event has an entry cost, and families pay for their own travel and rooms. The master class weekend has its own registration. Shoes and the dress code are bought separately. We name every one in writing, with what it is for, before you register.

Auditions

How auditions work

  1. 01

Step 1: Book a placement visit

A class with our teachers at the level that seems to fit, and a short talk with the director afterward.

  2. 02

Step 2: Audition in a class

An audition is a class in our studio. Dancers wear practice clothes with hair up. There is no video to send and no solo to prepare.

  3. 03

Step 3: Talk with the teachers

The teachers talk with the dancer and the family about the level, the weekly hours and what the season asks.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Hear in writing

Families receive the decision by letter, with the level and the schedule, before registration opens.

The season

What a season holds

Two regional events and a master class weekend, each within a day's drive. We print no results.

    Fall: placement and rehearsal

Placement visits come first, then the new schedule settles in and rehearsal begins.

Winter: choreography and a master class weekend

Pieces are set for the spring, and guest teachers come in for a weekend of master classes.

  • 03

    Spring: events and the performance

Two regional events, then the spring performance in May, where every dancer takes part.

  • 04

    Summer: the intensive

Full-day weeks in June and July, open to dancers from other studios.
